LAMPWORK is a term that refers to "torch" made beads. Many years ago, before propane and oxygen torches beads were made over small wick type lamps. That is where the term "lampwork" originated.
I use a Nortel Mid-Range Torch, fueld by oxygen and propane. The majority of lampwork beads are made with a soft Italian glass, seen standing in the jar at the left are some of the many colors. This glass comes in rods about the thickness of a pencil. |

THAT'S ME! This picture was taken through plexiglass protective wall AND a sheet of Rose Didydium glass. The didydium glass is why you can clearly see the bead in the flame. Normally, without the RD the flame is quite bright and quite yellow, this is called Sodium Flare.Without the filter glass you would just see a bright orange flame. Glassworkers wear special lenses that cut down on IR and UV.....and filter out the sodium flare, but I have mine OFF for this photo - because I would look so strange! Always wear your eye protection when actually working.... |
Each bead is made by heating a rod of colored glass in the torch flame - and carefully building the bead up on steel mandrel coated in a clay-based release.
Details are carefully added with thin "stringers" of glass, each a different color. |
